"The Search for Raoul Wallenberg"

In the second leg of DKE Week, the Delta Delta chapter will host an exlusive scholarly discussion and presentation on Wednesday, April 30th at 6:00 PM in Harper 140 hosted by Professor Marvin Makinen:

Raoul Wallenberg was a humanitarian sent to Hungary under diplomatic cover to rescue Jews from the Holocaust and is credited with saving 15,000 lives.

On January 17, 1945 he was arrested by the Soviets. In 1957, responding to diplomatic pressure, the Soviets announced that Wallenberg had died of a heart attack in a Moscow prison, however his death has been disputed…

Come join us as Professor Makinen takes us into the hunt and describes his connection with Wallenberg. As part of the UN commision tasked with investigating Wallenberg's death, Makinen became involved in a series of events leading to being arrested by the USSR and incarcerated in Vladamir Prison for 2 years. We hope to see you there, Wednesday, April 30th at 6:00 PM in Harper 140.

DKE Week 2008 is Here!

The Second Annual DKE Week is here at last! For the second straight year, the Delta Delta chapter will host a week-long blitz of scholarly events, community service and exciting campus activities, culminating in the second annual DKE Battle of the Bands! This year, Delta Delta is focusing on incorporating members of the University and surrounding community into three major events:

First, on Saturday, April 26th, DKE will be volunteering at the Gary Comer Youth Center, on 72nd and Ingelside

On Wednesday, April 30th at 6:00 PM, Professor Marvin Makinen will present an insightful talk titled "The Search for Raoul Wallenberg" in Harper 140

Finally, on Saturday May 3rd, DKE's 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands fundraiser for the AIDS Foundation of Chicagowill rock Bartlett Quad.

The brothers are excited for another succesful year, and we look forward to seeing you there - check back here daily for updates, photos and the latest on how the events are unfolding, and check out the Philanthropy section of our website for more details!

Delta Delta at Ronald McDonald House

On April 2, led by the Crimson XVI pledge class, the brothers and pledges of Delta Delta volunteered to cook dinner and entertain the children at the Hyde Park Ronald McDonald House. The brothers prepared a delicious meal of spaghetti, meatballs and garlic bread, and had a great time visiting with the children and their families. We hope to work with Ronald McDonald house again in the future!

Delta Delta returns from chapter trip

This past weekend, 7 brothers traveled to chapters at University of Michigan's Omicron and University of Toronto's Alpha Phi in what was likely the most epic chapter trip in Delta Delta history. Covering 2 countries and 4 cities in 3 days, Delta Delta had a great time and formed some strong bonds which will be sure to continue into the future. Alpha Phi has expressed strong interest in coming to Chicago soon and we will certainly be returning to Toronto.

Congratulations to Ian Cumings and Avinash Mandava, the newly initiated brothers in Delta Delta! The members of the Azure XV successfully completed initiation, and have joined the ranks of the Delta Delta Chapter, now more than 30 strong. The brothers and alumni extend their congratultaions, and look forward to their long and productive tenure in the hallowed halls of Delta Kappa.

The new school year is getting under way, and with it the Delta Delta chapter is renewing its work on campus. The new alumni newsletter is up, and available for download (Click Here). Moreover, the brothers are resuming their roles as prominent members of the University community.

In addition to numerous individuals positions of responsibility, chapter-wide initiatives and philanthropy continue to be a core focus for Delta Delta. Last weekend, brothers volunteered at the first annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival, providing support for visitors, working at vending stations, and assisting musicians. The event was a resounding success, and should be the start of a long and fruitful tradition for both Hyde Park and the Delta Delta chapter.

With the end of classes, the brothers of Delta Delta have spread across the globe, in pursuit of careers, philanthropy and fun. Among the myriad summer plans, some highlights include:

* Micro Finance in Africa
* Finance, Investment Banking, Trading, Consulting and Marketing internships in New York, Chicago and elsewhere
* NGO research in Armenia
* Travel to Italy and Western Europe
* And much more!

When autumn returns and the brothers gather once more to the hallowed halls of the Darling Maid, the chapter will no doubt be the richer for our many experiences.

Battle of the Bands: A Success!

Our First Battle of the Bands Fundraiser was a huge success! We drew in large crowds to check out the show - with nearly 250 people in all over the course of the three hour spectacle!

All 6 competitors put on a great show and helped us raise money to support the great work of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. Thanks to everyone who made this event a success by supporting, participating, or attending this DKE initiative. Also a special thanks to the following Co-sponsors of this event: Tang So Doo, WHPK FM 88.5, COUP, MAB, American Red Cross, Student Global AIDS Campaign, FOTA, MPO, UChicago American Red Cross, University Community Service Center, UChicago Alliance Against AIDS, and Friends of the Greek Council.

DKE Week continues with tonight The Day of the Scholar event:

The Future of HIV/AIDS: A Panel Discussion
Stuart 101, University of Chicago
Today - Thursday, May 10 @ 7p

Our Panel includes:

Dr. Dexter Voisin of the University of Chicago's School of Social Science Administration. Dr. Voisin will be speaking on Risk Behaviors and Infection Rates among African American Males.
Parrie Graham of the University of Illinois will be speaking on Clinical Research of Preventative Vaccine Trials.
Rev. Doris Green of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago will be speaking on the presence of HIV/AIDS in Chicago's Correction Facilities and specific steps that we can all take to help make sure that The Future of HIV/AIDS is a short one.

The event will end with a 30 minute Q&A session between the speakers and out audience.

Make sure to come out and participate in tonight's event. This event serves as an informational introduction to DKE's Battle of the Bands Competition this Saturday. Check it out!

UPDATE

This event was a success, as should be expected. Speaking to a group of 50 Undergraduate, these three experts discussed a wide array of HIV/AIDS related topics, from vaccination efforts, to state legislation, to risk behaviors, and AIDS in Correction Facilities. A big thanks to our dynamic speakers and all those who came out to participate in DKE Week's Day of the Scholar.

Next up for DKE, and the UofC, is the two day long Blood Drive, sponsored by the Red Cross. DKE Week off to a fantastic start!

Tonight's event was a smashing success! Filling a lecture hall with an audience of 75 people, Ross Wantland led a compelling, engaging, and intriguing workshop titled:

"MEN STAND UP: Men's Role in Ending Sexual Violence Against Women."

For two hours he moderated discussion exploring the complexities of Sexual Violence and the role of men in bringing to an end. It was a great contribution to the campus forum and a reflection on the many ways the men of the Delta Delta chapter reflect the DKE Gentleman.

Our next DKE Week event is "The Future of HIV/AIDS: A Panel Discussion" with experts from UChicago, the University of Illinois, and The AIDS Foundation of Chicago participating. Make sure to attend and celebrate DKE Week: The Day of the Scholar.

MEN STAND UP: Men’s Role in Ending Violence Against Women
A Workshop with University of Illinois - Urbana Champagne's Ross Wantland

When sexual assault occurs on university campuses, university men may be viewed as the problem, but rarely as the solution. The idea that university men would never care about rape is unfair; many university men are concerned with violence occurring in their communities. But many do not know where to begin when sexual or domestic violence happens. In this engaging workshop, Ross Wantland, founder of a rape education program by and for fraternity men, discusses the ways that the violence of some men hurts all men – as well as the women in their lives – and what we can do about it.

Come hear this dynamic speaker and participate in an engaing discussion about Men's role in ending sexual violence at UChicago!

Our site updates continue!

An extensive alumni section is now operating, where alumni can view past and current alumni newsletters, donate to the chapter and it's philanthropy projects (still developing) and contact the chapter. Please click here to view this section.

I've also added a general contact form, for site visitors to comment on the chapter, its website, and report any bugs/errors. Check that form out here.

Further updates, coming later today, should include the chapter history, working links to the alumni newsletter, a chapter calendar and a philanthropy page explaining our various community service, philanthropy and outreach programs.
